understanding “worship”

What are we filling our

Did you know that we are created to worship.

the feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity.
“the worship of God”
synonyms: reverence, veneration, adoration, glorification, glory, exaltation;

Yes, we were created to worship God. Our purpose is to worship the living God and be in fellowship with him, worship to me is being connected with God, having the honor of coming before him and praising him with all of my being…

Anyone confused? Let’s back up a bit, and understand “worship” in a way that applies to our lives, if we aren’t focused on worshipping God.

What are we fixed upon, is it ourselves, our struggles, addictions, stresses, jobs, other people, problems, finances? What we are worshipping if the focus is not on Jesus?

Our souls were created to worship God, but the world gets in the way, life happens, sometimes we don’t want to worship God, know him or even acknowledge that he is there. But our souls are craving to worship, make an idol, obsesses over something. It is part of who we are, it is in fact in our nature. These idols we create, obesses over, look different in all of our lives. Maybe it is our self-image and we are constantly obsessing over how we look, we can make an idol out of ourselves. Maybe it is an addiction and some kind of substance in our lives becomes an idol, maybe its our problems, maybe it is our finances, another person, maybe its a celebrity or sports team. What is taking the place of your worship. I am not saying it is wrong to like a celebrity or sports team, to be concerned with your looks and take care of yourself like the bible says we should, but we should be careful that these hobbies don;t become obsessions or idols.

There was a time in my life where God humbled me and showed me what I was obsessing over or making an idol over something, and I realized he is the only one who fulfills my soul, he is the one whom my heart longs to be connected with and worship. I hope and pray this is making sense, even if it is just one of you. I’m praying this helps open your eyes and hearts to see that our souls were created to be united with God.

The spirit of the world… is really isolation from God. The idols and all are keeping us isolated, away from our father. Think about that. The spirit of the Lord is unity, and oneness in spirit. It is hard feeling like we are pulled two ways, when we realized that being apart of “the world” and its ways is really isolation from our God, our souls will try to make way or replace what we long to worship, but it will never satisfy, and we will become caught in a cycle of false idols and obsessions.

What I want to say is it is never to late to turn that around today! If you are new to worship music or understanding what all of this means, stay with me 🙂 I am encouraging you today to change the way you listen, and be open to understanding worshipping our God. I want to encourage anyone who is reading to make a mindful decision to listen to worship music at some point today, or check out a church service with a friend, if your in NYC text/email me and I’d love to take you if it isn’t “your thing.”

I found such a difference in my thinking when I was listening/reading the word of God and filling my soul with songs that are pleasing to God vs constantly listening to music that didn’t bring or add meaning/ value/ hope into my life. The words of the songs we sing have power to change or influence our behaviors. If we are listening to music that is constantly depressing our moods they will bear heaviness and depression upon our lives, and keep our mindsets there. If the music we listen to talks mainly about sex, money, and drugs what do you think our behaviors and minds will be focused upon ? What are we worshipping? Where is our focus?

I remember understanding worship on a deeper level. I was in Mississippi on my first middle school missions trip. I remember singing and starting to grasp and understand the words we sang were alive and true, and they connected my heart with heaven, understanding the great privilege and honor we have to come before the Lord as we are through worship.

That is my favorite thing about it! We come to God, AS WE ARE! We don’t need to have it all together,I dont think anyone ever always has it all together,  he accepts and loves us no matter what!

This is a personal question, this is not coming from a place of judgement, just a place to reflect because there came a time where I seriously needed to reflect and reconsider what I allow into my life, heart, ears, soul, my everything, what I allow my soul to worship and be focused on.

There comes a time where we all need to reconsider what we worship. It’s easy to say yea of course I worship God, at church, on a sunday for an hour, and maybe I attend a bible study or prayer meeting… and we start to check boxes and leave our worship in those settings. We give Jesus our Sunday’s, he is our sunday friend, and then we carry out our week. Imagine if we could worship Jesus all the time, and not just box him into a day or an hour, but we made an effort to seek the time to worship him and glorify him for what he has done. It just amazes me that we have the ability to come before the Lord, the little people that we are and just find ourselves in his presence, this is something I never want to take for granted.

It is through worship where our souls are truly connected to their creator, our father and we become united with him, and we find ourselves at complete peace because we are solely focused on worshipping God, his goodness and him because he is who he says he is. Because it is what we are created to do, and when we are doing exactly that our souls are overjoyed, fulfilled and pleasing God with our worship.

I love worshipping, I love being in God’s presence. I love singing words that aren’t just words, words that carry eternal significance and remind me of how great my God is, how he is for us, that he created me with purpose, love and intention the same way he created you. I love being reminded of these things, and listening to worship while I drive, run, walk, travel. It serves as a constant reminder on who deserves my worship, praise and focus. It also helps me not focus on myself, my problems, issues, stresses, it helps put things in perspective and remind me of who God is, and how he upholds and keeps his promises.

I can honestly tell you I worshipped this year when I was on the most beautiful color mountaintops of life, where everything was going well, and it felt like I was on top of the world.

I can honestly tell you I worshipped and clung to every word when I was walking through the darkest and lonliest and valleys, that I wasn’t sure I’d ever get out of. I worshipped him then and held him true to who he is, and He got me through that in a time of worship! So if you are going through a hard time, and feel like you don’t see God keep worshipping. Victory comes through our praise, keep praising him! I promise you this season isn’t meant to last forever.

It is when we are still able to worship him in times good and bad and continue to believe and hold him to his promises that our focus is in the right place. It changes the atmosphere. A friend of mine told me wherever she travels she will start playing worship because it changes the atmosphere and where there is the dwelling of the holy spirit and light, darkness cannot hide. In fact it must flee! Keep praising him, victory comes in our praise.

i long to worship,

i long to be in God’s presence

i long to be with the creator and lover of my soul

i long to praise his holy name

i long to lift my hands to the one who is worth it all

i long to worship the son who set me free

because he is who he says he is

I wanted to take a look at scripture and see what God says about worship, so let’s open up our bibles and see what He says…

Psalm 100:1-5

1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his ; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

1 Chronicles 16:23-26

23 Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. 24 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. 25 For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. 26 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens.

John 4:21-24

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

Psalm 99:1-4

1 The LORD reigns, let the nations tremble; he sits enthroned between the cherubim, let the earth shake. 2 Great is the LORD in Zion; he is exalted over all the nations. 3 Let them praise your great and awesome name— he is holy. 4 The King is mighty, he loves justice— you have established equity; in Jacob you have done what is just and right. 5 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at his footstool; he is holy.

Psalm 29:1-11

1 Ascribe to the LORD, you heavenly beings, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. 3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon leap like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning. 8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert; the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaksand strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, “Glory!” 10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. 11 The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.
